cb350 shopping list
I've already got some of the items I'll need for my CB350 rebuild, but I'm sure this list will grow as I dissect the bike and find issues.
Parts
It probably makes sense to find a parts engine because I'm sure I'll need something. I noticed that my points and tachometer housings both have some scoring in them. I assume that my cam is crooked so I should probably fix that and replace both of those housings.
gaskets - I bought a complete gasket kit from ebay. At least, it was described as a complete gasket kit, but I'm not convinced. For example, I don't think it includes the gaskets for the carburetors.
oil seals - I bought the OS-1 oil seal kit from bore-tech.com. It allegedly has every oil seal I'll need for the bike, but again, I'm not convinced. For example, the screws that adjust valve tappet clearance each have little rubber seals on them and I don't see replacements for those in this kit.
carb kit and cleaner - I'll need a carb cleaning kit or two for sure. I may even need new jets, depending on my exhaust situation.
stainless steel engine bolt kit - I bought this on ebay from alloyboltz.com. It is a complete set of stainless steel washers and allen bolts for the CB/CL/SL350 engine. I had a lot of trouble getting some screws out of my crankcase, so I'm going to replace any screws I encounter with these.
cables - I bought a new tachometer cable which is thick and black and unlike the thin, grey cables that came stock on the bike. I might replace the throttle, brake and clutch cables just for a unified look.
rearsets and clubman handlebars - I'm going to add these to give the bike somewhat of a cafe racer look. Though, I'm not sure how far in this direction I'll go. I really like "tucking in" and zipping around on this bike, so these should be fun accessories.
exhaust - I may alter my exhaust system, though I'm not sure what I'll do. I like the 2-into-2 look, but I could do 2-into-1 or even CL-style raised mufflers.
tires - it doesn't make sense to go through all this work to optimize the bike and leave crappy old tires on it.
Expendables
I'm going to need lots of lubricants and fluids for sure.
grease - I ordered some Bel-Ray waterproof grease which should be here in a few days.
engine oil (10w-40) - I'm going to try to find a few gallons of the Honda GN4
fork oil - I'm not sure where to get this locally so I may have to order from online. I think that one of the service manuals I have recommends 10w, but some people online have recommended 15w or 20w. I'll need to do some more research, but I've got a good amount of time before I'll need this.
chain cleaner - I've needed this for a while and just ordered some.
chain lube - This is another item that I've neglected for too long but I've got some on order.
brake fluid - I grabbed some DOT 3 brake fluid at Auto Zone the other day. It should be more than enough.
WD40 - I found a great video series on youtube about cleaning a motorcycle. The narrator recommended getting WD40 in both a spray bottle (for cleaning parts on the bike) and in a jug (for cleaning hardware off the bike).
shrink wrap tubing/tape - I'm going to try to use this for my wiring harness, if possible. I won't know if it's a good idea until I can have a closer look at the beast.
permatex anti-seize - I've been using this stuff every time I put a screw or bolt back in because I had a bunch of issues with electrolytically bonded parts while trying to get into my crank case. I bought the tub with the brush top and it's been working pretty well.
loctite - The Clymer's book recommends this. It sounds like the opposite of anti-seize.
Tools
In addition to what I've already got, I'm going to need to buy or borrow at least this much extra:
fire extinguisher - It may seem excessive, but the Clymer's manual recommends having one. It's not a bad idea to have one in general.
compression gauge - I'd like to measure my compression before I go through all of this effort. Some people might argue that disassembling the cylinders is dumb if my compression is within range already.
micrometer - The Clymer's guide mentions this. I'm not entirely sure what it is or why I'll need it yet.
cylinder gauge - The Clymer's guide mentions this. I'm not entirely sure what it is or why I'll need it yet.
torque wrench - The factory service manual does give torque specifications for some fasteners. I'm sure that these weren't provided just for kicks and that they have some merit. These are expensive so hopefully I can borrow one.
calipers - I have a set of calipers but they are SAE. I need to measure down to .01mm (or maybe just .02mm).
plastic/rubber mallet - I actually found one on amazon that is both!
impact driver - I think that my friend Paul just bought one so hopefully I can borrow it for disassembly.
snap ring pliers - There are a few circlips that will need to be removed.
hydrometer - I don't need this urgently, but they are really cheap. I'd like to have one around since I've got two bikes now and each has a non-sealed battery.
chain cleaning brush - This isn't urgent, but I bought one with some other things so I could get free shipping from motorcycle-superstore.com.
heat gun - I'll need this for the shrink wrap tubing.
I'm sure there will be more, but I wanted to catalog what I knew already.
